“Urology is great because it has a lot of technology. We use very modern technology with lasers and various different forms of scopes… It allows us to treat both medical and surgical problems,” Dr. Martin Richman opens up about his journey to becoming a urologist based in New Port Richey, FL and Safety Harbor, FL. His path to this specialized field stemmed from a deep fondness for the sciences during his college years in Indiana University. The ability to apply scientific knowledge and theories to practical healthcare situations drew him closer to the medical field.
Technology in Urology
His interest piqued by the promise of cutting-edge technology in urology, Dr. Richman went on to complete his medical school and urology training in Ohio. The blend of medical and surgical treatments offered by urology seemed an appealing challenge. From lasers to different forms of scopes, urologists are tasked with performing extensive surgeries through minimal incisions.
The Reward of Cure and Long-Term Care
What proved the most rewarding for Dr. Richman in his work as a urologist, however, was the balance between achieving quick cures and managing long-term patient relationships. “Urology allows us to get good outcomes because there are a fair number of urologic disorders that have a cure… There’s also a lot of urology problems that require chronic long-term management of the patient,” he explains.
An International Perspective
Further down the coast in St Petersburg, FL, Dr. Shaw Zhou holds a unique perspective in urology as an international doctor who underwent rigorous training both abroad and in the United States. Originally from Shanghai, Dr. Zhou pursued his studies in the University of Miami before completing his internship at the University of Pennsylvania and his urology training at the University of Nebraska Omaha. Dr. Martin Richman (New Port Richey, FL):
I’m Dr. Marty Richman. I’m a board certified urologist with Advanced Urology Institute. I’m originally from Cincinnati, went to undergraduate at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, went to medical school in Toledo, Ohio, and did all of my urology training in Cleveland, Ohio.
Went into college looking at the sciences and also I thought about history and various other topics and really enjoyed science and I like that medicine allowed me to apply science to patients and helping people get better. Urology is great because it has a lot of technology.
We use very modern technology with lasers and various different forms of scopes and trying to do big surgeries through small incisions, trying to do things in a minimally invasive manner. It allows us to treat both medical and surgical problems. Urology allows us to get good outcomes because there are a fair number of urologic disorders that have a cure.
We can have a problem that is treatable, whether it be surgery, medications, minor procedures that we can actually improve a patient’s life and get to a cure. There’s also a lot of urology problems that require chronic long-term management of the patient so we have that mixture of quick cures with either surgery or other procedures as well as the long-term physician-patient relationship.
Dr. Shaw Zhou (St Petersburg, FL):
My name is Shaw Zhou. I’m with the Advanced Urology Institute. I grew up in Shanghai in China so I came to the United States when I was 1990. I went to University of Miami. I finished University of Miami.
I did my internship at the University of Pennsylvania in 1995 and I went to do my urology training at the University of Nebraska Omaha. So I finished Omaha and came to here to practice for the last 16 years.
