A Journey Into the Unknown: First Diagnoses
When Dave Bussone, a retired healthcare executive, first discovered he had prostate cancer, his world momentarily stalled. “You’re going to be concerned about what it means, what it’s going to do to you,” he admitted. Thankfully, the comfort of a proficient physician alleviating fears and providing guidance made the journey less daunting. He says, “My physician was very good. He went over all the options with me and explained what he would recommend that I have.”
A Beacon of Trust and Reassurance
Jimmy Deas, a former patient at APCI, was reassured by his urologist about the excellent center he was referred to. His urologist, who frequented APCI, ignited a spark of optimism for Deas, saying, “You’ll like it down there.” His prophecy proved true as Deas became one of the many patients to find solace and support at APCI.
Overcoming Fear with Technological Advancements
Don Dubois, Ph.D., a radiation physicist at APCI, understands the fear patients harbor at the mention of cancer. “We try to do our best to alleviate all those fears,” he asserts. The center employs state-of-the-art technology to ensure a smooth, non-invasive, and pain-free procedure. “You’re not going to feel anything more than you would feel if you just go and get a simple chest x-ray. It’s just like getting your picture taken,” Dubois adds, offering a sense of relief.
A Unique Fraternity of Support
Bussone further describes the sense of camaraderie and support among the patients at APCI. “You see the folks who have treatments after you, the people before you. It really is a fraternity,” he says. This fraternity extends beyond the center’s walls, with patients keeping in touch, forming bonds, and offering each other comfort and empathy.
An Embodiment of Empathy and Professionalism
Martin Tompkins, the Practice Manager at APCI, takes pride in the work they do. “We are a referral-based service. We work with patients that have been referred to us,” he says, emphasizing the trust between the referring physicians and the institute.
Caring for You as a Person
Dr. Roessel, a former patient, praises the team at APCI for their empathy and personalized care. “They care about you not just as a patient, but as a person. This is very evident in all the processes you go through,” he says.

Dave Bussone, Retired Health Care Executive:
When I first found out I had prostate cancer, I mean obviously you’re going to be concerned about what it’s going to mean, what it’s going to do to you, what kind of treatment you want and our need even. And the physician that I had was very good. He went over all the options with me and explained what he would recommend that I have.
Jimmy Deas, Former Patient:
When I found out that I had the prostate cancer and was referred here by my urologist, he assured me what a great center it was, that he came down here 2 or 3 days a week and worked in some capacity and he just had all kind of good things to say about it and he said you’ll like it down there.
Don Dubois, PhD, Radiation Physicist:
Patients have a lot of fear when they hear the cancer word and we try to do our best to alleviate all those fears. Technology is only one part of that solving that issue, alleviating the fears and some of the fears they might have is, is this going to hurt, is this going to burn and the simple answer is no. You’re not going to feel anything more with the way we provide this treatment than you would feel if you just go and get a simple chest x-ray. It’s just like getting your picture taken and that surprises a lot of patients.
Dave Bussone, Retired Health Care Executive:
The folks that you run into, I mean you see them, the folks that have the treatments after you, you see some of the people that have the treatments before you and it really is a fraternity. You get to know one another. I’ve come back a couple of times since I ended my treatments just to see how some of the other men were doing. I’ve stayed in touch with a couple of them and we’ve developed a friendship.
Martin Tompkins, Practice Manager at Advanced Prostate Cancer Institute:
We take a lot of pride in the work that we do here. Obviously we’re a referral based service. We basically are working with patients that have been referred to us. You know that there’s a great deal of trust in the referring physicians for us to take care of their patients. Even though we are a radiation therapy center, one of the things that we like to do is discuss the options that the patient has for the treatment of their prostate cancer. So they’re not only going to hear what radiation therapy can do for them, but they’re also going to hear some of the other options that they have available to them.
Dr. Roessel, Former Patient:
They are some of those caring people I’ve seen and they care about you not just as a patient, but as a person. And this is very, very evident in all the relation you have with them and all the processes you go through.
