As we delve into the world of urology, let’s start with a personal journey, that of Dr. Scott Sellinger, a board-certified urologist from Tallahassee, FL. Coming from upstate New York, he found his second home in Florida, where he’s now been for over thirty years. His odyssey in becoming a urologist began at Syracuse University, followed by further medical education at the University of Florida. His dedication to the field meant he stayed on in Gainesville for his surgical internship and urology residency, wrapping up in 1991.
“I learned about urology in my third year of medical school, and that’s when I had exposure to urological patients on the floors, and I met the urologists, and I thought, wow, these are great people to work with,” Selinger recounts. From then on, he became part of the large healthcare system of Tallahassee, joining our team at Advanced Urology Institute.
Why Urology – Poignant Reasons and Broad Scope
What sets urology apart, according to Dr. Sellinger, is its broad scope. “We work with men, we work with women, we work with older people, we work with younger people, we work with children.” Yet he highlights a particularly wonderful aspect: “the nice thing about urology is for the most part, we can really help these people.” This ability to assist a diverse range of patients filled him with a strong sense of purpose that only further solidified his choice in becoming a urologist.
A Personal Connection – Dr. Carlos Ramos’ Story
Dr. Carlos Ramos, another key member of our team in Panama City, brings a unique perspective to the field. Originally from Puerto Rico, his journey took him to the U.S. Army, through a urology residency at the University of Texas in Houston, and eventually to an assistant professorship at the university.
For Dr. Ramos, his fascination with urology started with a family connection. “When I was in medical school, I had an aunt that had a kidney problem, and I started reading on it, and I became very interested in urology,” he shares. This personal experience made a lasting impact leading him down the path of urology.

Dr. Scott Sellinger (Tallahassee, FL)
I’m Dr. Scott Sellinger, and I’m with our Advanced Urology Institute office in Tallahassee. Well, I grew up in upstate New York, but I’m Floridian now. I’ve been in Florida for over 30 years.
I did my undergraduate training at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, and then after that came to Florida and did all of my medical school training at the University of Florida, and then stayed on in Gainesville and did my surgical internship and urology residency, finished in 1991, and then I’ve been in Tallahassee ever since then.
I learned about urology in my third year of medical school, and that’s when I had exposure to urological patients on the floors, and I met the urologist, and I thought, wow, these are great people to work with.
And I figured out that we work with men, we work with women, we work with older people, we work with younger people, we work with children, and the nice thing about urology is for the most part, we can really help these people.
Dr. Carlos Ramos (Panama City, FL)
I’m Carlos Ramos. I’m a urologist with Advanced Urology Institute. I’m originally from Puerto Rico. Went to undergrad and medical school at University of Puerto Rico, then I spent three years in the U.S. Army, then finished my time and did a residency in urology at University of Texas in Houston.
And after that, I served as assistant professor at the university and moved to Panama City in 2000. When I was in medical school, I had an aunt that had a kidney problem, and I started reading on it, and I became very interested in urology. I found it was a fascinating specialty, and after that, the rest is history.
