A Pioneering Start in Brain Cancer Research
You must first understand the curious beginning of Dr. Billy P. Vanasupa’s diverse medical journey. A board certified urologist at Advanced Urology Institute in St. Augustine, FL, Vanasupa dedicated a couple of years to clinical research in brain cancer before setting his sights on urology. He tested various drugs to combat brain cancer, and in his words, “none of them really panned out,” but he affirms, the experience “was nonetheless very interesting.” Driven by the spirit of academic rigor and research, Vanasupa learned invaluable lessons on resilience and the importance of trial and error in science, lessons he would carry with him in his subsequent medical journey.
The Year of Rejuvenation
After years of intense academia, there came a pause, a decision, Dr. Vanasupa was “very happy” about. He took a year off before going to medical school, using the time to recuperate and recharge, preparing himself for the demanding journey that lay ahead. This interval in his career emphasizes the importance of mental and physical well-being, even for those on the path to curing others.
Bridging the Gap: From Breast Cancer Research to Urology
During his year off, Vanasupa didn’t completely sever ties with the medical field. Instead, he became a research assistant at Astrum Biosciences, a company dedicated to breast cancer research. They were involved in an innovative approach that involved “taking the patient’s blood and semi-purifying it and introducing, trying to simulate their immune cells to attack the breast cancer cells.” This work would become a precursor to what Dr. Billy Vanasupa does now with prostate cancer, carrying forward a similar technique.
A Look at the Future: Personalized Cancer Treatments
This approach of boosting the patient’s own immune system to fight cancer cells is an indication of the future of cancer treatment, according to Dr. Vanasupa. He believes “a lot of future cancer treatments are going to be very individualized with the patient’s own immune system.” His diverse background in various fields of research and his forward-thinking mindset places him among the top urologists, pioneering personalized cancer treatments.

My name is Billy P. Vanasupa, DO. I am a board certified urologist at Advanced Urology Institute in St. Augustine, Florida. For a couple of years I did clinical research in brain cancer and tried testing various drugs and none of them really panned out, but nonetheless it was very interesting. I took a year off before going to medical school and I was actually very happy to take that year off just to recuperate from the intense academics that was required.
I was a research assistant at a company called Astrum Biosciences and I don’t know if they still exist now or not, but they were doing breast cancer research as far as taking the patient’s blood and semi-purifying it and introducing, trying to simulate their immune cells to attack the breast cancer cells. That is actually what we’re going through I think as far as prostate cancer, doing this quite same thing there. I think a lot of future cancer treatments are going to be very individualized with the patient’s own immune system.
